The Wrong Side of History: Riding the Budget Cut Bandwagon

The UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy Student Council is currently dominated by members of UP Alyansa-Buklod CSSP (which are in turn affiliated with Akbayan). In its long history, it has supported moves to remove the government’s responsibility in ensuring the right to education through budget cuts under the guise of ‘financial self-sufficiency’. In the University of the Philippines, this policy has resulted in the hiking of the tuition from P300 to P1000 per unit. In fact, this political faction initially supported the increase (supporting documents attached) but later claimed that they did not after massive outrage in the Diliman campus.
